Ranch Educator

Coulee Connections Alternative School is seeking an experienced educator who brings energy & compassion with priority on meeting children’s developmental, emotional, social, and academic needs within our school/ranch setting.  Our outdoor educators are an integral part of our larger alternative school team that utilizes an innovative, holistic, experiential approach to engage students in partnering with us on our life affirming, collective learning journey.  The ranch outdoor education team works within our larger collective program that includes academic learning (math, language arts, and STEM), Body and Brain activities, outdoor wilderness, adventure, and recreation programming.  Coulee Connections partners with over 20 area school districts, who refer at risk/special education students in need of developing and building their student-ready and learner skills.  Our Cedar Creek Ranch serves as the backdrop for students to explore nature, learn about the environment, and engage in hands-on activities, while also meeting educational standards and fostering a connection with the natural world. 

This position requires a desire and ability to lead experiential learning activities across diverse learning environments.  Our outdoor classroom spaces include vegetable & flower gardens/greenhouse, forest lands, spring fed creek, ponds, and prairie.  Our indoor learning spaces are thoughtfully arranged to bring the outdoors inside, allowing our educators the flexibility to tailor fit their activities with the learning needs of the students. We have an active farm to table program that looks for meaningful ways to connect the benefits of the students’ agricultural efforts back into our programming, the students, their families and the communities we serve.

Teachers have access to a wide variety of teaching and activity materials across a wide range of educational modalities and curriculums for supporting both group and individualized instruction.    Educators have the ability to flex curriculum and tune into student needs when matching materials to support individual and group learning.  Our team has a proven track record of bringing educator driven interest & innovation into realized curriculum development, activity integration and directly linking it with actualized student growth.  Our agency and team embody the principles that motivate educators to pursue careers in leading and nurturing our children and youth.  Our team loves what we do, and we are looking for that special educator to join our mission. 


Minimum Requirements

•    Commitment to guiding the progression of emotional, social, and intellectual learning.
•    Willingness and ability to engage in reflective conversation and collective/team learning.
•    Has a demonstrated pattern of exploring new things and seeking out professional development. 
•    Has experience and enthusiasm for reflective practices and collaborative problem-solving. 
•    Must have a positive attitude toward navigating the inherent challenges associated with change and growth. 
•    Experience in meeting and planning for the varied needs of students ages 5-17. 
•    Work as part of a team in planning and facilitating progressional lesson plans to meet emotional, social and academic readiness needs of students. 
•    Show initiative, seek help, manage workflow demands and change course.

Activities Coordinator

My name is Matt Tepper, I am the Program Director for Coulee Connections. We are an Alternative Education school in La Crosse WI. Our work is special. We have around 60 students through partnering with 22 surrounding school districts. Our job is to provide programming that will reorganize their most challenging Special Education students. We do this work collaboratively with parents and their public school teams. Our focus is to reorganize through experiential practice. Our curriculum is hands on, outdoors, and activity based. Our highly skilled team works extremely well together to create an environment where learning happens through positive shared experiences. 
 
We are seeking an energetic Activities Coordinator to connect with our at-risk population to implement adventure education activities through an experiential process.

Activities Coordinator
 
Full-time opportunity available:  We are looking for an energetic, organized and highly motivated professional to join our expanding Coulee Connections Team.  We are a cutting edge team, providing alternative educational services for at-risk students (K- 12) while utilizing an experiential, attachment-based skill-building milieu.
 
The right candidate will demonstrate the capacity to:

  • Enthusiastically connect with the at-risk population

  • Implement adventure education activities through an experiential process

  • Incorporate activities with families

  • Train student coaches to facilitate activities

  • Plan and lead outdoor, team building, and physical activity programs for K-12, experience with low-ropes/challenge activities is a plus

  • Manage student behaviors in multiple environments (in building, on/near water, community)

  • Modify activities for students with emotional behavior disorders

  • Effectively align activities to meet varied student developmental needs

 
Requirements:

  • Must have or be working toward a Bachelor’s Degree in activity related or recreation field

  • Knowledge and skills of outdoor recreation such as low ropes/challenge course implementation, canoeing, swimming, hiking, and environmental sciences

  • Excel in interpersonal and group communication

Student Coach

Coulee Connections has openings for part-time Student Coaches.  Student Coaches work within our innovative system to lead at-risk youth to build emotional social and behavioral resiliency in a dynamic academic setting.  Applicants must demonstrate the ability to:

  • Work with a diverse group of people

  • Manage a variety of tasks

  • Maintain patience and remain calm during stressful situations

  • Work a flexible schedule
